Marine Day is a national holiday in Japan, observed on the third Monday of July every year. This year, Marine Day falls on July 17, 2023. It began as “Marine Memorial Day” in 1941 and was designated as a national holiday in 1995. The holiday is meant to celebrate Japan’s prosperity as a maritime nation and express gratitude for the blessings of the sea. Marine Day became the final day of a three-day weekend due to the “Happy Monday System,” aiming to promote tourism and transportation industries.

On Marine Day, there are various ways to enjoy the day with children. You can start by going to the beach or visiting an aquarium to experience and interact with marine life. Participating in events held across the country can also deepen your understanding of the significance of Marine Day and raise awareness about environmental issues. If staying at home, you can enjoy quality time with children by looking at marine life picture books and engaging in marine-themed word association games or drawing activities.
